Optical fibre

With traditional Cat5e cabling it is only possible for each cable run to be a maximum of 90 metres in length. In addition to this, Cat5e cable is copper based and is not advised to be ran outdoors and under no circumstances should it be laid next to mains cables etc. Under certain circumstances this can cause a considerable problem; however with optical fibre cable only transmitting a light signal, it overcomes all of these difficulties and is completely unaffected by electrical interference and the short distances supported by traditional copper based cabling.

For example the majority of network backbone links are either between buildings or floors; therefore the distances between these can be from a few hundred metres all the way up to being kilometers apart. This is not a problem for optical fibre installations as standard network fibre modules will transmit up to 2km and can go much further with enhanced hardware modules.

Orchid has considerable experience in installing fibre optical cable. Whether it be a small run between floors, or a 24 core fibre linking buildings together, Orchid has the expertise to ensure you will get the quality of service desired.

Our experienced engineers can design your backbone from the ground up or simply advise as to the best way forward for expansion. Utilising a Fluke DSP4300 we will provide full test results for each individual core and on the more complex installations we can also provide full OTDR results if desired.
